In 1988, 1991 and 1998 Bangladesh was highly affected by flood and Tornado. Though the flood and tornado is regular natural disaster, in those years it was appeared as a cause of intolerable sufferings. At that time the whole country was under water. Household and infrastructure were damaged. People failed to decide about their future, because the flood damages their entire assets. It may be mentioned here that Sarishabari Upazila under Jamalpur district is situated on the bank of the mighty river the Jamuna and every year it is usually damaged by flood and river erosion that is why, the people of that areas are poor, extreme poor and ill-educated by nature. So that, these sorts of poor people is living in the said area.
At that moment of flood some young people of the said area were involved themselves in different types of relief and charitable work. Some of them only have experience of Red Crescent relief work and scouting. Based on these experiences they involved themselves into different charitable activities and create a good position in these areas, that was the beginning. From that time they were providing their services for the local people of Sarishabari and Jamalpur Upazila under Jamalpur district and Sirajganj Sadar and Kazipur Upazila under Sirajganj district during their different crucial period and help them to get recovery. All of these activities were for the time being and informal approach. They collect money from themselves and spend for the poor disaster affected peoples.
During the charitable work they were able to identify some major causes of local peoples suffering and they found that all the causes are deep rooted in the society from long years. If the young people want to eradicate discrimination from the society and establish equal rights in the society then they must have the legal identity in the society and they need more support from inside and outside of the society. In September 1999 they registered an organization and named it “Progressive Seba Kendra (PSK)”. So it can be easily said it was the outcome of the sincerest efforts for its target people of Jamalpur district. Having born in a fine morning of 1999, the organization has been able to put a positive impact in the lives of its target group by its on-going activities. All the activities of the organization have transformed the lives of mass people of the respective area significantly. PSK is registered as non-government, non-political, non-profitable development organization. This is people oriented organization and nobody can claim its ownership individually, the poor people of Bangladesh are the owner of the organization.
PSK’s success is owes vision of alternative development strategy while in significant ways, stand apart from the mainstream official development paradigm in top-down, overly centralized, male dominated and measured largely in terms of monolithic growth. The organization’s alternative development strategy is participation of the poor, gender equality, social justice, productive and sustainable resource management for poor people especially for the women, indigenous and disable people of the rural areas.
